So You Want to Play Sports in College; Here’s how.

Do you want to compete in intercollegiate athletics? If so, here's what you need to do.

First, do a reality check. If you are good enough to play basketball in the Big East or football in the SEC, coaches from those leagues and others would be taking so much of your time that you wouldn't have the 5 minutes you need to read this. Ask your coach and other knowledgeable people (not family or friends) which colleges might be interested in your athletic talents. Do some research of your own. Then make a list of possibilities and take it to your counselor to see which colleges might be a good fit for you. And, ask if he or she can add to the list.

Whatever you do, don't weigh athletics too heavily. Academics should always come first...always. Size, location, campus environment, special programs, and other factors should be considered as well. Try to find the "ideal" college for you, not just a place where you can compete in athletics.

Don't make the mistake of failing to consider colleges you haven't heard much about. Until recently, the Rutgers and Louisville football programs attracted no national attention, but look at them now. Have you ever heard of Mount Union? They have a pretty good football program too. Kenyon, a great academic school, has built a dynasty in swimming and diving, Hobart has great lacrosse, and lots of much bigger schools envy the record of little Hartwick College in soccer. And, have you heard about the "giant killer" softball and baseball teams at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette? There are dozens of examples like these.

Remember that there is a lot of financial aid aside from athletic scholarships, and that there are some great athletic programs at the NCAA II and III levels.

Never lose sight of the fact that the goal of leaving college with a good education should come before your athletic aspirations. Unfortunately, there are coaches out there, at all levels, who are more interested in winning games than educating student-athletes. If you suspect that you've encountered one, run, don't walk, in the opposite direction.

Be sure you learn the rules governing athletic recruiting. And, be certain you and the college coaches with whom you come into contact adhere to them strictly. Go to your high school coach if you have questions or concerns.

Too learn as much as possible about the colleges you are considering, be sure to be in touch with admissions offices. They will provide you with much more comprehensive publications and information than you are likely to get from coaches. Coaches, to nobody's surprise, are very focused on athletics, while good admissions counselors are likely to know far more about academics, campus life, student support services, etc.

Don't make the mistake of ruling out colleges in your initial research because of their listed costs. Frequently, students out-of-pocket costs are far lower.

Of course, some coaches are deluged with email and snail mail from high school athletes, so you may not get a quick response when you contact them. Give them a month, and then try again. You may never hear from some of them. Don't take it personally...it just means they are already talking to the folks they want and that they could use a lesson in etiquette.

And, be aware that even the coaches that do respond to you with letters, brochures and emails may not have a serious interest in you or may want to seriously recruit you only if the athletes in whom they are most interested decide to go elsewhere. That being the case, continue to communicate with all coaches who appear to be interested in you until you have and accept a firm offer from a college. It's the best way to protect yourself against disappointment.

After you do commit to a college or university, be sure you contact and sincerely express your gratitude to the coaches who have been communicating with you. It's the right thing to do, and it might help a coach remember you if you later decide to transfer from the first college you attend.

The good news is that many schools today can be taken online offered by an accredited career education college.

The advantages of a career education college is that it will place more focus on the actual profession instead of the standard academic requirements most other colleges include in order to obtain a degree. With the limited amount of time we all have in today's world, this gets us to where we want and need to be quicker. We are able to apply this knowledge almost immediately into our work environment, making it a "WIN WIN "for everyone!

Even though a career education college works great for those already in the workplace, it is also a tremendous advantage to those who have yet to begin their careers. For the individual that has not yet begun their career this type of college may help them hone in on exactly what it is that truly interests them. I know for those just beginning their careers things change once they can see what is really involved in that profession and this type of college may help them to see that.

What makes a career education college unique is that some of them go about learning a little differently. Some ofthe colleges will offer actual job training, mentoring, some classroom work, and of course online studies. On the job training is something I feel very strongly about after spending more than thirty years in the work place.

Anyone that has not begun their careers yet should take advantage of any career counselors that these schools offer. A career counselor can help new students decide on the types of careers that match up best with their experience and interests. Programs like an internship can really help people decide what sparks their interests and if it is something they want to pursue. They may also be something for the student that just finish their four year degree and want to hone in on their profession.

For the seasoned veteran of the workforce that is seeking advanced knowledge of the current field they are in so that they can advance, the career education college can do just that. This eliminates the extra elective course that is not necessary for this type of individual. Some of the fields of study are automotive technology, business administration, accounting and finance, criminal law, information technology, nursing, and many other fields.

Some of the benefits for the student preparing to enter the workforce is that most career education colleges offer greater flexibility than most traditional schools, and have an faster rate of completion since they focus only on the field of study. This allows an individual to gain the knowledge and skills quicker and become more productive almost immediately in the work place.

Part of the motivation for these programs to be developed is the urgent need of certain careers in the work place. These demands make it necessary to get people trained to fill the positions that are available now. Accelerated Degree Programs Questioned – Will They Suit You?

These days there are a number of different accelerated degrees that you will be able to choose between when you're ready to get back to school. It's important to understand what accelerated programs really are and what they really offer to help make your decision.

There are both advantages and disadvantages to pursuing <accelerated online degree programs. It's important to be able to evaluate these accelerated programs so that you know what to expect and so that you can figure out if they are really a good match for you.

When the term accelerated program is used, all it means is that you will be able to finish your degree in less time than normal. A regularly paced Bachelors degree for example will take about 4 years to complete. If you pursue that in an accelerated program however, you can finish the degree in less than half the time.

This means that in less than 2 years you can finish an entire Bachelors program. When you're trying to find a new career, begin a more rewarding job or get a long awaited promotion, time is truly of the essence. The best way to move ahead with your goals therefore is to finish your schooling as soon as possible through accelerated degrees.

The majority of accelerated programs that you'll find will be offered in an online setting. Basically what this means is that you can take all of your classes and complete all of your work right from your home, or wherever you have your computer. In addition to the quick pace, this offers many other advantages.

With an online course, you will enjoy many conveniences that typical students don't get. One of these is that you can study from any university around the world without needing to live nearby or commute to the campus. It also means that you can complete your work at any time of the day or week, ensuring that you make your education fit into your existing schedule and responsibilities. The flexibility of an online environment makes accelerated programs even better.

Even with all of these advantages, not everyone is interested in online programs. This is because many people feed off of the on-campus environment and they need that for their education. Many other people need the in-person classroom and rigid attendance guidelines in order to make sure that they complete their assignments and actively learn.

Additionally, you should be aware ahead of time that an accelerated program is going to make you very busy. You will have to take lots of classes at once, and you won't have any extended breaks between semesters in order to recoup yourself. This enables you to finish your program in an extremely short amount of time. However, if you're not up for that kind of schedule than an accelerated program isn't your best bet.

The benefits of an accelerated program make most people feel that it's a strong choice for them. Being able to finish your degree in half the time it takes most people, while enjoying the flexibility of an online environment is too much to pass up on for many students today.

Show Your Style – Count Your Pennies

Your very own dorm room. Your home away from home. How will you go about making it "yours" something that reflects your personal style without breaking the bank?

Because your bed will be the biggest piece of furniture in the room and will be the focal point, plan to spend a bit more on a comforter that shows off your style. When picking a comforter, too, though make certain it's washable and hides the dirt. Speaking of your bed, will you bring your current one from home? Is it feasible to pack it and bring it with you, where will you sleep on holidays when you go home if your bed isn't there? Things to consider when thinking about your college dorm room sleeping space. Maybe you can get a futon from a used furniture store - something to double as a bed and couch.

As dorm rooms are typically not as large as your bedroom at home - and because you might be sharing that space, invest in plastic storage bins to hold clothes, office materials. Plastic storage bins can double as a dresser and be slipped under your bed or stacked in the closet.

You will be doing a lot of studying in your room, so make certain you have a place for your computer, whether you're using a laptop or a PC. If you have a laptop, invest in a laptop desk and you can work while sitting on the bed. If you can't afford a desk, fashion one out of a sturdy piece of wood and place it atop plastic storage containers (the containers can do double duty).

Saving money in some areas is all right but make sure when it comes to lighting your room, you have adequate lighting. Nothing is worse than squinting at the text in your books because the lighting isn't proper. Before you buy a light fixture determine whether you'll be putting it on a desk, or if you'll have lamp that affixes to the wall above your study space.

Remember, too, a place for your toiletries. You may have to use communal bathroom facilities so make certain to have a space set aside for your bathroom essentials and invest in something you can tote your items to and from the shower area.

You will likely be spending a lot of time in your dorm room, whether entertaining friends or studying for exams. Make sure it's a haven but don't go overboard on decorating. Keep in mind, too, that once the school year is over you will need to find a temporary home for your new belongings. Plan ahead.
