The Virtual Option

November 21st, 2009 by Lyle Jones

You may have heard of the advantages of enlisting your child in an online school. You may also have considered enrolling your child in this kind of education. Today there are millions of people enrolled in some kind of online school and this option may be right for you too.

There are a lot of online schools available for high school students. Online public schools, including charter school programs, offer publicly-funded virtual courses at no cost to resident families.

On the other hand, an independent virtual high school offers greater flexibility for families because they do not have to meet all of the standards required of public schools. University-affiliated online schooling programs often offer the highest quality courses due to their support from established colleges.

A virtual high school allows parents to take on a greater role in their child's education. Several of these online schools allow students to work at their own pace. A slower pace so they can master the material at a speed they are comfortable with, or a faster pace so they can graduate earlier. Students are rarely held back by their class with online school.

Studying in an online school requires a significant amount of discipline from both the student and the caretaker. The student must discipline himself to complete his work and attend class online, and the care taker must make sure that he does not fail to check on the student's advancement.

Online schools, like any other school has its disadvantages too. Because they study online, students enrolled in a virtual high school often miss out on the social aspect of their schooling. They are not given the chance to join the basketball team, the glee club, and they are not given opportunities to attend academic social gatherings like workshops and school events like the prom and graduation. Students also have to be self disciplined if they want to study in an online school.

If you think that online schooling may be the right choice for your family, take the time to explore the options in your state. You'll want to find a school that is properly accredited so that your child can transfer credits between programs and earn a diploma recognized by colleges.

You can choose an online school and search the internet for virtual high schools accredited in your region. If you want to save more money by choosing a public online school found at the state-by-state list of virtual high schools. Sooner or later, you will find a virtual high school that will suit you and your child's needs best.

Participating in an online school or taking courses through the world wide web is becoming increasingly popular. Do your research and find out if a virtual high school is right for you.
